Nineteenth-Century Studies M.A. and Ph.D Interdepartmental
Area of Specialization
Nineteenth-Century Studies
The curricular and faculty strengths in Nineteenth-Century
Studies in the three departments of English, History, and Modern Languages
and Literatures
have
made Nineteenth-Century Studies a natural area for a doctoral and master's
level interdepartmental area
of specialization. The graduate curriculum for this area of specialization
is anchored by two graduate seminars taught in rotation among the participating
departments English, History,
and Modern
Languages and Literatures. Each
course is cross-listed; the first, English/History/Modern Languages 919, “Interdisciplinary
Approaches to the Nineteenth Century” provides
the relevant background to interdisciplinary study of the nineteenth century
in Europe and
the United States and is taught every fall. The second, English/History/Modern
Languages and Literatures 918, “Interdisciplinary Seminar in Nineteenth-Century
Studies,” focuses on some key theme or issue in nineteenth-century studies
from an interdisciplinary perspective (some possibilities include rise of the
middle class, gender, colonialism and/or postcolonialism, religion,
progress, nationalism, realism, Romanticism,
transatlantic transmissions of culture, the impact of science and technology,
the construction of love and sexual relations, the problem of representation,
political and cultural authority, the recovery of buried texts/histories, and
so on). The three programs offering this interdepartmental area of
specialization each have ample offerings at the graduate level which approach
the nineteenth
century from disciplinary perspectives; the program will also accept relevant
nineteenth-century courses in Music, Art History, and Theatre.
