Introduction

Autopoint was a manufacturer of mechanical pencils, ball point pens, and desk-top accessories. This catalog shows the product line at the peak of its evolution. In 1969, the Autopoint product line had been built up incrementally over a period of about 50 years. The next year Autopoint was bought by Gillette. Within a few years, the product line had been decimated.

This catalog was used with the "Trademarks Catalog" which showed the trademarks and stock art which was available for use on Autopoint pencils.

This catalog is in a specially printed three-ring, loose-leaf binder. The individual pages are dated. I put the date 1969 in the title since the binder itself is dated June 1969 and a majority of the pages are dated 1969. Also, I put the Peterson Avenue address in the title because that was the address of Autopoint in 1969. On the catalog reproduced, a label was used to change the address shown on the back cover to the Western Avenue address where Autopoint moved after it was bought by Gillette.

For earlier views of the Autopoint product line, see the 1927 catalog and 1930 catalog. Gillette eventually did sell Autopoint, and the company exists today. Although it has a smaller product line, a new Autopoint Company still makes excellent pencils. The Autopoint Company web site is available at:

http://www.autopointinc.com/info.html

NOTE: I need more catalogs. A catalog from the mid-1930s would show the intermediate stage of evolution between the pencils sold in the 1920s and those sold in the 1960s. Also, a catalog showing the Realite product line would be useful. Autopoint sold a variety of pencils, including double-ended pencils, under the Realite brand name between the 1920s and World War II.

Autopoint Pencils

In 1969, most Autopoint pencils had the same basic design. A number of excellent features -- such as the "GRIP-TITE" tip -- had been developed in the early days of the company. Over the years, those features were incorporated into each new pencil. The basic Autopoint design features are shown on the guarantee page, Page 4, shown below.
NOTE: Several Autopoint pencils did not use the basic design described on the guarantee page.
  • The pencils in the Patrician (No. 200) and Whitehall (No. 300) sets shown on Page 7 use a Propel-Repel mechanism.
  • The Challenger Pencil, No. 40 and 140, shown on Page 18 use a Propel-Repel mechanism.
  • The Pacemaker Pencil, No 90, 90S, 190 and 190S, also shown on Page 18 use a spiral mechansim.
According to Sol Shulman, who was president of Autopoint in the 1960s, Autopoint bought the propeller-repeller mechanism from another company.

The story of the Pacemaker pencil is discussed in a web page called, An Autopoint/Dur-O-Lite Mystery - Solved.

Since each page is fairly large, I have provided links to the pages in the catalog rather than incorporating them directly. You can view only the pages you are interested in. A Product Name Index and a Model Name Index are also available.

Notes:

  1. Leads
    • In the 1920s, two leads were used in Autopoint pencils:
    • Thin (Writing) Lead Thick (Checking) Lead
      0.046" diameter 0.076" diameter
    • In 1938, 0.036" lead was introduced. Autopoint called that "Real Thin Lead."
    • In the 1960s, 0.05mm (0.020") lead was introduced. Autopoint called that "Ultra-Thin Lead" or "UTL."
    • By the 1960s, Autopoint used the term "Standard" for 0.046" lead.
    • Metric conversion:
    • Autopoint Name Measure
      Traditional  Metric
Ultra Thin Lead - UTL 0.020 inch  0.5mm
Real Thin Lead  0.036n inch  0.9mm
      Thin - Writing - Standard  0.046 inch  1.1mm
      Thick - Checking 0.076 inch

Note: Apparently, Thick - Checking (0.076") lead is no longer available commercially.

  2. Model Numbering

  3.

The system of model numbers used in this catalog appears chaotic because it is based on the system first used in the 1920s. Over 50 years, numbers for new products were shoe-horned into the existing model number system.

A few products, mostly leads and erasers, have the same basic numbers they had in the 1920s.

    1920s  1969
    No. 12T  No. 12T
    No. 30  No. 30N
    No. 31 No. 31N
    No. 32 No. 32K
    No. 33  No. 33K
    No. 34  No. 34E
    No. 35 No. 35E
    No. 36 No. 36L&E
    No. 37  No. 37L&E
    No. 39  No. 39E
    No. 52  No. 52G

There have been a couple of major design changes. Although new models were renumbered, they were given numbers similar to older designs. For example:

    Name  1920s  1969
Double Tip  No. 7  No. 8
    Checker  No. 9  No. 10

When Real Thin (0.036 inch) lead was introduced in 1938, Autopoint numbered models using the smaller lead by adding 100 to the model number of their pencil using writing (0.046 inch) lead. Autopoint used a similar approach to numbering pencils using the UTL (0.020") lead. For example:

    Name  0.046" 0.036" 0.020"
    Utility No. 6  No. 106  No. 3106
    Twinpoint  No. 8  No. 108  No. 3107
    No. 3108
    Dialer  No. 12T  No. 112T
    Executive  No. 48  No. 148
