This micrograph taken by Gary Krichau is a bright field image of Nickel particles produced by Reuben Rieke here at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. The aim of this project is to produce magnetic media through a chemical process of metal cations with different polymers.
This project also involved Diandra Leslie-Pelecky, who was behind the physics, and Zhang, who was the chemist that actually produced the particles.
If you look at the larger image (click on the image to see the larger view) you'll notice the faceted nature of the Nickel particles surrounded by the polymer matrix.
