Web-based course. Focuses on the history, research, theoretical base and practical issues associated with services for children birth through five years of age who have developmental disabilities. Topics include issues related to public laws, effectiveness of early intervention, biological and environmental influences on development, definitions of "at-risk" and "disabled" populations and quality early childhood programs.

Web-based course. Addresses abnormal development and disorders as well as assessment and intervention strategies appropriate for children ages 0-3 years in the areas of language, motor, cognition, socialization, and play. Students will be guided through the design and implementation of individualized programs of home-based services which reflect developmental, activity-based, family-centered principles. A 1 credit field experience in home visiting is encouraged for students inexperienced in home visiting or working with infants/toddlers.

Classroom Programs for Preschool Children with Disabilities (3 cr.) (Fall)

Web-based course focused on the selection, design and implementation of developmentally-appropriate classroom interventions are presented for children 3 to 5 years of age with disabilities. Activity-based interventions are emphasized in integrated, community-based programs. Intervention programs and activity plans are designed with consideration of classroom space, equipment, materials, groupings, schedules, and parent-teacher communication. The teacher's role as classroom instructor or as community consultant is discussed relative to team collaboration and data-based program decisions.
A 1 credit field experience in an ECSE classroom is encouraged for students inexperienced with preschool disability programs.

Web-based course. Discussion of chronically ill infants and toddlers who require intensive medical intervention prior to and following discharge from an NICU. An overview of etiology, characteristics, and developmental implications of selected medical conditions related to developmental disabilities is presented, as well as the implications for transition from hospital to home/community programs.

Web-based course focused on strategies for instruction and specialized interventions to accommodate the diverse needs of students with significant disabilities in inclusive settings. Adaptations and unique accommodations for effective education of students with autism, dual sensory impairments, moderate-severe intellectual impairments, and multiple disabilities are provided. Topics include neuromotor disorders, health care, positioning, and use of assistive technology.

Practicum/Student Teaching for infants and preschool children (6 cr.) (TBA) |
Field-based experience designed to provide the student opportunity to practice skills and ideas introduced in the content courses of the ECSE program. One credit experiences with infants/home visitation or preschool classrooms; 4-6 credit student teaching experiences required for teaching endorsement in ECSE. Full-time placement in a public school 3-5 year old program, and home based program with infants for a minimum of 8-14 weeks is expected. Exceptions to this schedule are possible depending upon the student's work history and professional experience with these populations.

Web-based. Issues and best practices for interacting with families who have children with disabilities. A self-reflection process is used to present family systems theory as a foundation for discussion of family-centered services in the design and implementation of intervention programs. Consultation and communication skills for working collaboratively with families and other team members are presented, practiced, and discussed. |
