| Welcome to the third annual Nebraska
International Multicultural Exchange Conference (NIMEC) at
the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. NIMEC provides an outstanding opportunity for cultural exchange, mutual educational enrichment and increased multicultural awareness between members of the campus and community. The conference is designed for participants to interact with and learn more about international students who represent widely diverse cultural, linguistic and educational backgrounds that contribute so much to the diversity of our college campuses and the community. It gives participants the opportunity to get to know our international students as well as allowing them to showcase the richness of their cultures and traditions. The theme of the 2003 NIMEC conference is Moving Toward a Global Community. Conference presentations range from authentic demonstrations of arts, foods, and costumes of various cultures to discussions and dialogue about issues relating to education, family, religion, culture, language and society. For example, some of the topics addressed at the previous NIMEC conferences (2001, 2002) include understanding humanity through cultural diversity, Mozambique, Korean, Czech, Chinese and Russian cultures, languages and arts, Muslim culture and Islamic religion, strong families around the world, literature of diversity and cultural exchange, African American fraternities and sororities, countries of Malaysia and Iran, Balinese and Thai traditional dances, and the Immigration of Germans from Russia to the Great Plains. The conference opens with a Welcome Event on Friday evening at the Cornhusker Hotel. Sessions on Saturday range from authentic demonstrations of arts, foods and costumes of diverse cultures to presentations and discussions relating to education, family, religion, culture, language and society. The luncheon will feature a panel discussion that will address the conference theme Moving Toward a Global Community. NIMEC is organized by LFFS Student Work Team Organization, Lincoln Friends of Foreign Students Community Organization, International Affairs, Office of the Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs and the Department of Academic Conferences. The 2001 and 2002 NIMEC Conferences were recipients of the University of Nebraska Chancellor's Student Organization Education/Entertainment Award. Please join us in celebrating and embracing multicultural richness and humanity. |
