RELEVANCE/RESONANCE

The conference theme Relevance/Resonance invites considerations of the role of printmaking in the past, and especially to examine the role of printmaking in today's art world. This theme aims to recognize the impact and ramifications of the printed mark used for visual effect and as a means for authenticity - how things "look", and the "truth" of the printed word. This culturally instilled ability to "read" printmaking evolves from the earliest history of the graphic arts, and resonates beyond the limits of 1950's print society definitions. Those who "cannot not make prints" will seek this forum to examine their antecedents, proclivities, conservationist stance, and centrality to today's multi-dimensional possibilities for printmaking. An equally significant audience of art patrons, students and educators will be a welcome part of this forum on the art of the print.

This conference will offer a unique format of presentations, interviews and open conversations lead by discussants as keys to bring about a greater dialogue and interchange between participants. The conference will begin on Wednesday, October 6, 2004, at 5:00pm with receptions to open the featured exhibition "Mirror of the Wood: A Century of the Woodcut Print in Finland". Also that evening at 8:30 will be a keynote presentation by 3 distinguished artists who will talk about their work and the significance of printmaking in their lives - the format will be conversational and informal for interactions, dialogue and art action.

Conference Site

The conference site will be the Embassy Suites Hotel, downtown Lincoln, Nebraska, and the Department of Art and Art History at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, in Richards Hall and Nelle Cochrane Woods Art Building. The UNL campus and downtown Lincoln will be an attractive site for the MAPC conference, offering close access, a vibrant downtown scene, a beautiful campus, concentration of art venues, all easily accessible by walking, or a short drive.

MID-AMERICA PRINT COUNCIL

The Mid-America Print Council was formed in 1992 as a regional membership organization (affiliated with the American Print Alliance), and serves its membership through biannual conferences, the publication of the twice-annual Journal, the sponsorship of member juried exhibitions, and currently has around 400 members.

MAPC has established a strong regional organization for educational exchange and dialog, community networks, sponsorship and support of printmaking awareness, quality and appreciation. Past conferences have been held at: Indiana University South Bend; Indiana University Southeast, New Albany; the University of Cincinnati; St. Cloud State University, Minnesota; the University of Wyoming, Laramie. The MAPC region encompasses the states of Colorado, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kansas, Michigan, Minnesota, Nebraska, North Dakota, Ohio, South Dakota, Wisconsin and Wyoming.
