FOREWORD

Survival Czech is designed to provide learners a minimal introduction to the Czech language. The goal is for the learner to be able to fill out official documents in the Czech Republic, read and understand public signs, and engage in simple communication. It has an accompanying CD Rom Survival Czech that contains additional conversational and listening comprehension exercises with automatic correction. Internet support is provided on the following site: http://unl.edu/MilaSaskova-Pierce. Learning can be continued with the textbook Czech for Communication I.
Survival Czech is structured in such a way as to teach the language itself rather than about the language. It seeks to enable students to communicate in Czech in a meaningful way, and to better understand the culture and attitudes of the Czechs. Students are taught with authentic language materials from daily life in the Czech Republic. Equal importance is given to the four language skills; listening, reading comprehension, speaking and writing. Each lesson consists of listening comprehension materials, grammar information, reading materials, and writing and conversation exercises. Writing activities are also incorporated into grammar exercises, and into exercises, which constitute preparation for speaking.
The main goal of the communicational approach to learning is for students to gain communicative skills in a culturally relevant context.
The author of the photographs is Professor Robert Fiala (Ph.D.) from Concordia College in Seward, NE. Authors of the computer format and encoding are Tomáš Pantucek and Mami Ode. The newspaper clips are from Lidové noviny, for which the authors would like to thank the Editorial Desk.
