Outside the Lines: Creative Storytelling Activities for Children Schedule for Saturday, October 7
9:00 – 9:45 AM Linda Garcia – Hispanic storytelling for children Linda Garcia draws on her experiences as a young girl in Omaha’s Mexican-American barrio to tell stories for children and families.
10:00 – 10:45 AM N. L. Sharp – “Keeping a writer’s notebook” Most writers keep a notebook of some kind. You are invited to explore the power and magic of this important writing tool as award-winning children’s author, Nancy Sharp Wagner, shares from her own notebooks.
11:00 – 11:45 AM Regina Leininger: Stories from Around the World Regina Leininger uses chants, movements, puppets and props to entice her audience to become a part of her stories. The stories she tells are multicultural tales from around the world that will entertain and delight listeners from pre-school to adult.
12:00 – 12:45 PM Sack lunch program with Matthew “Sitting Bear” Jones Children & parents bring their own lunches and join us outside as Kiowa/Otoe-Missouria storyteller Matthew “Sitting Bear” Jones, in native attire, tells the tales of his tribes. Sometimes funny, sometimes sad, these stories reveal a vision of the world—from the time of Creation to the coming of the white man.
1:00 – 1:45 PM Leta Powell Drake – “From page to stage” Join Leta Powell Drake as she reads from John Steptoe’s award-winning children’s book, Mufaro’s Beautiful Daughters, and decide which part or character you would like to play. When the storytelling ends, the performance begins and you can help bring the story to life!
2:00 – 2:45 PM N. L. Sharp – “Where do you get your ideas?” This question is the one most often asked of writers. Nancy will share some of her favorite “secret weapons” to help you come up with your own ideas for stories, articles, and poems.
3:00 – 3:45 PM Ricardo Garcia – “Storytelling in action with help from the listeners!” This is your chance to learn and try different storytelling techniques as writer and storyteller, Ricardo Garcia, leads you through the telling of some Hispanic and Hispano tales.
4:00 – 5:00 PM Rajean Luebs Shepherd – “C is for Cornhusker” Traveling from A-Z, author Rajean Luebs Shepherd will take you on a journey across the state of Nebraska to discover its many unique treasures. Join her for a “behind the scene” look into the writing of this informative and entertaining book published by Sleeping Bear Press as part of the Discover America State by State series.
Throughout the day:
All activities, except for the lunch program, will be held in the “Soc. Pit” behind the Callen Conference Room, lower level of the Smith-Curtis building. The lunch program will be held at the outdoor amphitheatre behind Old Main. Nebraska Wesleyan University, 50 th & St. Paul, in Lincoln |
