Organization of American
Kodaly Educators - OAKE
The Kodaly philosophy integrates many of the best ideas, techniques, and approaches to music education. Inspired by Hungarian composer and director Zoltan Kodaly (1882-1967), the method is a comprehensive program based on singing that develops the ability to understand what is heard, then transfer that learning to reading, writing, improvisation, and composition. The aim is to instill a love of music in each child. Kodaly educators strive to familiarize students with America's unique musical culture first with their own musical heritage and then to introduce, compare and contrast such music with that of other ethnic backgrounds.
PSKOR, the Plains States Kodaly Organization, is an affiliate chapter of the Organization of American Kodaly Educators. OAKE, which was founded in 1975, brings together music educators across the country who are interested in the Kodaly philosophy. The objectives of PSKOR are to provide opportunities to exchange ideas on the impact of the Kodaly concept on education and to perpetuate the spirit of cooperation among all music educators. Three to four local workshops are held annually in the Lincoln/Omaha area.
