Over a century after his death, Walt Whitman remains an extraordinary presence in American cultural memory.  Films and television shows depict him.  Poets and musicians allude to him.  Schools and bridges are named after him.  The Whitman and Cultural Memory Archive is an ongoing project that seeks to catalog and analyze the innumerable and diverse references and allusions to Whitman in popular culture.   The archive is compiled by students at the College of William & Mary.

The archive is in its initial stages of development.  While the archive will be expanded in the future to include music and other categories, currently it focuses on film and television.
