Encoding Galley ProofsGenerally, in dealing with printed texts, the case of corrected proofs is actually the most familiar and easiest to deal with. We use <add>, <del>, etc. to encode handwritten annotations/modifications/etc. to printed texts. This registers the presence of and difference between the two layers, since these elements only contain handwriting and the main text is always printed. Instead of trying to represent and render Whitman's editorial marks in the margins, we will simply encode the effect of his marks - deletions, additions, changes, etc. to the text itself. This does not mean the document will be rendered that way on the screen - most likely we will not be able to reproduce what's on the page. But remember that user will have the image of the actual page to refer to.
