Redox Biology Center RFA for Pilot Grants

The Nebraska Redox Biology Center (RBC), funded by a Center for Biomedical Research Excellence grant from the NIH, has awarded pilot funding to two applicants to our RFA request.  The awardees are Dr. Melanie Simpson, Assistant Professor of Biochemistry at UNL for her proposal “Redox Coordinated Extracellular Matrix Remodeling in Cancer”, and Dr. Dee Harrison-Findik, Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine, Gastroenterology-Hepatology Section at UNMC for her proposal “The Redox-mediated Regulation of Iron-Responsive Gene Expression in the Liver”. The primary objective of this program is to stimulate research in the area of redox biology and to enhance competitiveness in obtaining extramural support.

ELIGIBILITY: The pilot grant program is open to all faculty at UNL and UNMC. It is anticipated that one or two projects will be funded for a maximum of 24 months each. Proposals must represent a new area of research for the laboratory rather than an extension of an ongoing and funded project. We would be most interested in funding the projects that satisfy all of the following: (i) collaborative, interdisciplinary research, (ii) research that directly addresses the most critical areas in redox biology, and (iii) projects with a high likelihood of future funding by NIH. In addition, those who will be funded should either be active members of the RBC or have commitments for active participation in RBC activities.

REQUIREMENTS: Successful applicants will be required to submit an RO1 grant proposal to NIH before the end of the funding period. Successful applicants will automatically become members of the RBC, will be expected to present progress reports biannually and will be invited to participate in the informal monthly RBC research meetings. A final report documenting progress, publications, and grant proposals submitted and awarded, will be due to the RBC office 30 days prior to the end of the funding period. The final report must also include the title of the resulting grant proposal submitted to NIH for funding and the date of submission.

BUDGET SPECIFICATIONS: The maximum budget per project will be $50,000 per year for a maximum of two years. Funding for the second year will be contingent upon satisfactory progress in the first year and availability of funds. Equipment requests should not constitute the major portion of the budget. All budgeted items must relate directly to the research project and have to be justified.

FORMAT: The pilot grant proposals will have the general format of an NIH RO1 proposal, however, with different page limitations. The face page, should be followed by a first year budget, summary of overall budget, biographical sketch (NIH style, 4 page limit including other support), and research plans (specific aims, background, preliminary results and research plan not to exceed 4 pages including figures and tables) and bibliography. The margins should be 1 inch on all sides and use of the Arial font, size 12 (but no smaller than 11.5) is recommended.

DEADLINE:The deadline for the 2007 application submission has passed. New information will be available in the Fall of 2008.

SELECTION: Members of the Redox Biology Center will serve on the selection committee. Successful applicants will be notified as soon as possible. The start date for funding is anticipated to be Feb 1, 2008.
