Archaeology of the Great Plains and Rocky Mountains areas, nineteenth century military sites, forensic archeology

Dr. Scott has worked for the Center since 1983, reporting for duty on December 5 (George Custer's birthday). Before coming to the Center he was a park superintendent and curator for the Oklahoma Historical Society at Fort Towson Historic Site. He also served as the District Archeologist for Montrose, Colorado District, Bureau of Land Management from 1975 to 1983. He has worked throughout the Great Plains and Rocky Mountain West on a variety of archeological projects. He has served as President of the Colorado Council of Professional Archeologists and the Nebraska Association of Professional Archeologists, and on the Board of Directors of the Society for Historical Archaeology and the Plains Anthropological Society. He is also the President of the Board of Trustees of the PAST Foundation, a non-profit organization dedicated to working with educators and the public in learning about archaeology.

He has long-term research interests in the archaeology of the Great Plains and Rocky Mountain areas. Doug specializes in nineteenth century military sites archaeology and forensic archaeology with five books, and over 100 monographs, and articles published on those and related subjects. He is particularly noted for his expertise in battlefield archaeology and firearms identification. He was awarded the Department of the Interior's Distinguished Service Award in 2002 for his innovative research in battlefield archaeology that started with his work at the Little Bighorn Battlefield National Monument.
