The program has a spacious computer lab in Oldfather Hall containing twelve workstations, associated hardware input/output devices, and the most sophisticated mapping, image processing and geographic information systems software available.
The Geographic Information Analysis Laboratory is open to students enrolled in pertinent geography courses, particularly cartography, geographic information systems and remote sensing courses. Here students process geographic data, create and analyze maps and digital satellite imagery, and write their own mapping programs. The lab affords the opportunity for students to pursue their own geographic interests as well as assigned research projects.
Geography also has a long-standing and close educational association with the Center for Advanced Land Management Information Technologies (CALMIT) Laboratories, in the School of Natural Resource Sciences in Nebraska Hall. The CALMIT Labs, staffed by geographers, are well-equipped for computer mapping and image processing of natural resource and environmental analysis. The CALMIT geographers teach a number of remote sensing and geographic information systems courses for the department and have hired geography students to help with their research projects.
