Research Interests
My interests are many and broad, which is what drew me to the field of Geography. My main interest lies on the human/cultural side of Geography, but I am also interested in remote sensing. My thesis deals with the Historical Geography of settlement, specifically that of two small communities, Shaw Point and East Bay, on Sand Island, Wisconsin. These communities sprang up in the mid-1870's and the last resident left the island in 1944. Sand Island is now a part of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. I was attracted to these communities because of their isolation. I want to look at why people chose Sand Island, how the towns developed economically and socially, and why the communities eventually died.
