The Backswimmer (Notonecta undulata) is found throughout North America in ponds and shallow, slow moving streams where it feeds on insects and small animals. It is sometimes called a "water bee" or "water wasp" as it will occassionally bite people wading in the water. Specialized hairs on its abdomen can hold an extra air supply enabling it to stay underwater for long periods of time.
