Crane Fly

Crane Flies (Tipula spp.) are found near streams and lakes in mud or wet moss. The larvae feed on decaying vegetaion and terrestial or emergent plants. The larvae may live for a year or more. The short-lived adults do not eat. Males swarm above bushes or treetops waiting to mate. The crane flies provide food for many species of birds, fish, and invertebrates.
