Bald Eagles once nested along the Missouri River, but now are primarily winter migrants, especially along the Platte. They favor riparian woodlands for nocturnal roosting and prefer cottonwood trees. They feed on fish, small mammals, and waterfowl, foraging as predators, scavengers, or pirates. Flood control has improved bald eagle habitat and they have been upgraded from an endangered to a threatened species.
