Important wetlands have formed in riparian zones and flood plains along the Missouri, Platte, North Platte, and Elkhorn Rivers. These areas provide protection for water quality in the river, spawning grounds for fish, and habitat for water fowl. Conflicts among the many users of the river are inevitable. Recent agreements have been reached to guarantee stream flows in the Platte to protect habitat for wildlife. The Platte is an internationally important flyway for migrating birds and a major tourist attraction for the state.
