Dear USAMO Exam Manager,
Congratulations! Your student(s) named below has/have qualified to take the 32nd USAMO. All qualified students have been sent a formal invitation to participate. Since both you and the student(s) indicated at the time of the AIME that you would accept a USAMO invitation, the exam materials are enclosed.
The USAMO must be administered on Tuesday, April 29 and Wednesday April 30, 2003 in two 4.5-hour sessions each day, which are to be scheduled from 12:30 p.m.-5:00 p.m. EDT or equivalent in your time zone. Please familiarize yourself with the "Information for Proctor" section found on page 2 of the AIME/USAMO Teachers Manual. If you are not going to be the Proctor yourself, then make sure your designee familiarizes himself/herself with these materials promptly.
There is an immediate task that must be done. Please confirm that all necessary arrangements to administer the exam have been made. Fill out the USAMO Acknowledgment Response Form (T-II form found on page 5 of the USAMO Section of the AIME/USAMO Teachers Manual or downloaded from our website at www.unl.edu/amc) and fax to 208/978-9117 (Emergency FAX # to be used only if the first number fails is 402/472-6087). In addition, your qualifying student(s) has/have been notified with instructions to completely fill out the Student/Parent Response Form (S-III), with instructions for them to fax or mail the completed S-III form to our office. The Student/Parent Response Form can be found on our website at www.unl.edu/amc or in the AIME/USAMO Teacher Manual. All completed forms (T-II and S-III) sent by fax or mailed must be received in the Lincoln office by April 23. Failure to adhere to this deadline could cause disqualification of your student(s).
The USAMO is a prestigious event. Only about 250 students from about 12,000 American Invitational Mathematics Examination participants take the USAMO. The top 12 participants will be declared Winners and honored at ceremonies on June 22 and June 23, 2003 at the National Academy of Sciences, and the Mathematical Association of America (MAA) Headquarters in Washington, DC.
A Mathematical Olympiad Summer Program (MOSP) will be held from June 15 to July 5 at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Between twenty-four and thirty USAMO students will be invited, all expenses paid, to the 2003 program. Selection will be based solely on the exams administered by the Committee on the American Mathematics Competitions (CAMC), primarily the USAMO. This year, the International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO), will be held July 11-19 in Tokyo, Japan. The United States will participate with a team of 6 students. The six member IMO Team will be selected from the top 12 USAMO qualifiers after further testing at MOSP.
USAMO Winners and all those invited to the MOSP will be notified by telephone shortly after the USAMO grading on May 2, 3 and 4, 2003. Information regarding the MOSP will be sent to those selected beginning on Monday, May 5. A copy of the USAMO with solutions and results [including the score interval(s) of your student(s)] will be mailed to you on Wednesday, May 7. Also included will be a USAMO Certificate of Participation to be presented to your student(s). Students and teachers should not inquire about results before Friday, May 9.
A good way for students to prepare for the USAMO and set appropriate goals for themselves is to work on previous USAMO and IMO problems and to study the content of the Arbelos Journals (order from our website www.unl.edu/amc or AIME /USAMO Teachers Manual).
Please note that only the student(s) listed below are allowed to take the USAMO at your school and the exam must be given to all of your qualifiers at the same time. Non-citizens who are not permanent residents of the U.S.A. are not eligible to participate.
You will find the name(s) of your 2003 USAMO qualifier(s) on our website www.unl.edu/amc.
Sincerely,

Titu Andreescu
AMC Director and USAMO Chair
