Benita Albert
Benita H. Albert
... But truly, the most important thing is that she inspires us ... Often she tells us stories relating to the topics we are doing, such as her calculus cats. ... integral cat whos tale is bent like an integration sign. ... cat of continuity that glides, not walks across the floor. ... One story happened .. [high school / bomb threat / class moved outside].. [class was] learning the fundamental theorem of calculus and they were reciting, "integration is anti-differentiation." .. attracted a crowd of African-American students who were fascinated by this strangely civil-rights inclined chant. ... In short, Mrs. Albert is simply the best teacher we've ever had and we would love for her to be recognized for all the hard work and all the heart she has given to us, her students. . . .Jeffrey Hankins, Jingyuan Wu, & Scott McKinney

Richard Askey
Richard Askey
Askey ... delivered a talk to our math club about partitions and Ramanujan, which was both challenging and inspiring. ... Aside from being an excellent teacher, Prof. Askey exceeded the normal expectations by inviting me to his office each week to discuss more higher-level mathematics. It was there that I learned how to truly think about mathematics (convexity is a concept, not an algebraic expression), which helped me to succeed even in the USAMO and beyond. At the same time, Prof. Askey helped to strengthen my precalculus base (trigonometric formulas are meant to be learned, not memorized), .. Prof. Askey deserves the Edyth May Sliffe Award. ... We hope that he receives it in return for his efforts. . . . .Ian Dubois, Poling Loh, & Robert Lemkeoliver

Lorraine Baker
Tuesday after Tuesday, Ms. Baker is in Room 231 after school for hours with a smile, passing out math contest problems and providing us with snacks. ... She is a busy teacher, educating over a hundred math pupils a day, and has helped bring many math competitions such as the AMC AMTNJ, Delaware Valley ML, and NJML contests to Princeton High School. Her tireless effort to make the math team known through-out the school is very impressive. The size of the math team almost doubled this year. She posts notices on the "Daily Bulletin" and broadcasts math events on the intercom virtually every day. ... Overall, her perseverance in spreading the magic of mathematics is what has really led to our success. . . . .Anton Malyshev, Benjamin Tsou, Howard Yu, & David Costanzo

Judith A. Cinnamond
The nomination ... was easily agreed upon because when it comes to preparing our math team for success she is second to none. ... She genuinely cares about everyone on the team and wants to make sure that we are always learning and growing an appreciation for mathematics. She spends time to review the process of solving some of the more challenging problems and we know more math because of it. The fact that it makes us more likely to succeed in the future is just an added benefit that is secondary to the actual learning. ... Her enthusiasm in class carried over... and this is the reason most decided to devote their Tuesday afternoons to the club. Without Ms. Cinnamond, the math team would not be where it is today. . . . .Matthew Chu, Taktin Oey, & Yifei Chen

Barbara Currier
Barbara Currier
Dr. Currier deserves the... Award most because she has ... revived not only the Math Team, but also it's ideals: learning, solving and competing for life rather than for score. ... she brings character [to] our team, instilling a love of learning rather than a thirst for victory. ... she has given us all a love and enthusiasm for mathematics, connecting its beauty to specific problems and encouraging us to practice not for the contest, but for a command of careful problem-solving technique and for our own enjoyment. ... Since her arrival at the position, our focus has shifted from score pursuit to developing an appreciation for unusual mathematics and divergent thinking. Her gift - not our score - will last a lifetime. . . . .Christopher Tsai, Marshall Sosland, & Zachary Abel

Ernest Czerwinski
There was no doubt in any of our minds which teacher to nominate for the Edyth May Sliffe Award. For the past few years, Mr. Czerwinski has dedicated himself to the math team at our school. Every week, he would challenge us with puzzling math problems, teaching us how to think outside of the box. In addition to the weekly meetings, Mr. Czerwinski also spent hours of his own time making booklets and packets with practice problems, formulas, and strategies to help us improve as math students. He has always had the philosophy that success cannot come without practice. With this philosophy in mind, our team has placed first in the state math league for six consecutive years. Mr. Czerwinski has truly been a wonderful teacher, coach, and mentor for us. . . . .Joseph Zimmerman, Nina Mann, & Tony Zhang

Sue Doker
Sue Doker is a dedicated sponsor of the Lincoln Mu Alpha Theta chapter. At this year's State Convention, Lincoln High School took 2nd place overall out of upwards of fifty schools, closing the gap for first place to a mere 16 points. ... the reason Lincoln MAO was ranked as high as it was at the convention was because of Mrs. Doker tirelessly putting in hours long after school is out to work with students just as dedicated to the club as her. ... the members of Lincoln MAO have the materials they need to study, ... not to mention an open classroom door and a warm, friendly atmosphere. Over 24 years of teaching there, Ms. Drews has gained a reputation for being the toughest, yet fairest math teacher at Hopewell Valley Central High School. Her AP Calculus BC class is notoriously rigorous, yet it prepares students well for the exam, where they almost all score a five. She places great emphasis on theory and proofs, preparing us well not only for higher level calculus courses but also for the difficult questions on competitive tests like the AMC 12, that require more than just skillful use of a graphing calculator. She is a faculty advisor to the math league team and takes us to numerous competitions each year, encouraging all of us at every one of them. . . . .Mengxi Ouyang, Scott Weingart, & Thomas Bruestle

Renee Fish
Ms. Fish's dedication to math education extends far beyond the classroom. For as long as our school has been open, she has beeen the sponsor of Mu Alpha Theta, our school's math club. She stays for 2 or 3 hours after school every day, organizing club activities and keeping track of everything. Some of the events she's made possible for us are: a math competition for elementary school students; two meets that we host every year for other high schools; and huge turnouts for the competitions we attend (including States), all coordinated lovingly by her. Although two of us have never had Ms. Fish for class, she is still the teacher who has most helped us follow our mathematical dreams with all her tireless effort. Now that she will be retiring this year, it's the perfect time to honor her with an award that seems to have her name written right on it! . . . .Brianna Satinoff, Steven Helkin, & Ye Wang

Gregory Greene
Mr. Greene is a veteran. He might not have fought in wars but he's served students in the classroom for 35 years, and is still going strong. He's taught and enlightened a generation of students, instilling in them both lessons of math and lessons of life. Mr. Greene takes his job seriously: he wants every student to succeed, and reaches out to help them do so. We appreciate the long hours he puts in - Mr. Greene is always ready, willing and prepared to tackle any lesson! Yet while he is serious he's also fun - on lucky days he'll strum on the guitar and sing; and don't forget bad (good?) puns! The only thing more exciting than a class or team with Mr. Green is anticipating what will come tomorrow. He loves to challenge his students, and himself; this is just one reason he's respected by all students and teachers this side of the math department. It is our honor to recommend Mr. Greene for this award!! . . . .Barry Weng, Evan Kalish, & Taiho Shin
