Nominated by:John Zhou, Vivek Behera, Charles Huyi, and Alan Huang

Let p be the proposition that Mr. Schmitt is deserving of the Edyth May Sliffe award. Though it would normally be acceptable to prove said proposition through only one avenue, there exist many different ways to demonstrate the validity and trueness of p.
Mr. Schmitt is an enthusiastic supporter of mathematics education, having taught a wide range of courses from Algebra 2 on up to Discrete Mathematics and Linear Algebra. Students often whisper to one another that he is the most brilliant teacher in our school, yet he is able to make mathematics appealing and enjoyable for all who have the fortune to attend his classes. At the same time, he challenges the students, giving difficult questions where appropriate. On one occasion, he gave the Discrete Mathematics class a problem set from a Japanese National Entrance exam for graduating seniors and we spent several days working out solutions. Another key part of Mr. Schmitt s teaching is to support mathematics competitions. He is always present as a proctor for the American Mathematics Competitions (10 and 12) and the AIME/USAMO.
Furthermore, the math club holds meetings every few weeks for the American Scholastic Mathematics Association (ASMA) and Michigan Math League (MML) competitions and it is indeed a common sight to see Mr. Schmitt waiting patiently as the students take the exams. During these times, we all know that he is doing the problems as well and we make sure to check answers at the conclusion of the contests. Due to his dedication towards our mathematics studies and competitions, we have consistently performed as one of the top teams in Michigan and around the country, boasting 4 USAMO qualifiers this year.
As a valuable member of the school community, Mr. Schmitt cares about the students both in terms of mathematics and in terms of general well-being. Though strict to enforce school rules, he has a distinctly humorous side that endears students to him. Furthermore, Mr. Schmitt is always present at school functions, sometimes supervising, sometimes volunteering, but always cheering on our school. In fact, he even helped coach the tennis team and refereed the soccer team. He is also always available for tutoring or other help. When one of the students was doing a mathematics research project, Mr. Schmitt served as an excellent mentor with many resources in the academic domain.
In our opinion, there is no teacher more deserving of the Edyth May Sliffe award than Mr. Schmitt. Though he teaches for the love of working with mathematics and bright high school students, it would only be appropriate to recognize his outstanding efforts as an educator and person who has inspired so many.
