AIUSA: New Executive Director, Effective May 1

The Board of Directors of Amnesty International USA has announced its appointment of a new Executive Director to replace the outgoing William Schulz. From the MidWest Memo:

"The Board of Directors is pleased to announce the appointment of Larry Cox as Amnesty International USA's new Executive Director effective May 1, 2006.

The Board is confident that, under Larry's leadership, AIUSA will continue and enhance the growth and progress that it has made under the capable leadership of Bill Schulz. The Board looks forward to Larry’s arrival this spring and to welcoming him before the membership at the AGM in April.

Larry currently serves as Senior Program Officer for the Ford Foundation's Human Rights unit. His work focuses on international justice, advancing economic, social and cultural rights, and human rights in the United States.

Prior to his role with the Ford Foundation, Larry was for five years Executive Director of the Rainforest Foundation, an international organization that works with indigenous peoples in the Brazilian Amazon to protect their land and rights.

Larry is well-known not only in the human rights community but also in the offices of both AIUSA and the International Secretariat. For fourteen years, he held a number of positions including Communications Director, Director of the Program Against the Death Penalty and Deputy Director of AIUSA. He also served for five years as Deputy Secretary General of the International Secretariat in London, which undertakes Amnesty International’s research and services its activist membership around the world.

Larry has a B.A. in History from Mount Union College, has done graduate work at the University of Geneva and is currently pursuing an M.A. in Religion and Human Rights at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He is co-editor of Close to Home: case studies of human rights work in the United States and writes and speaks frequently on human rights.
