University of Nebraska–Lincoln
2000 Summer Field School in Archaeology
May 15 - - July 7, 2000
Plans for the 2000 UNL Field School in Archeology are nearly complete. This year, the field school will be offered in cooperation with the Nebraska State Historical Society and will offer students a great learning opportunity. For about the first two weeks of the eight weeks session, the class will investigate several of tracts of land between Lincoln and Omaha. During this part of the summer you will be helping to look for areas occupied by early Euro-americans and Native American communities. The focus of this period will be on learning site survey and mapping techniques.
For the rest of the session the class will be based at Fort Robinson State Park in northwestern Nebraska. This part of the class will focus on excavation of a 19th Century Army barracks used by African American troopers and other frontier soldiers. The Nebraska Game and Parks Commission plans to rebuild this barracks and excavations will recover artifacts and record architectural information needed for an accurate reconstruction. Students will have a great opportunity to learn how to gather archeological data. You may be camping or living in a historic Army building in Ft. Robinson State Park during this part of the summer. Things might be a bit rustic, and everyone will have to help with camp operation, but everyday you will wake up to the beauty of the Pine Ridge. Cost etc: The major costs of this field school will be 9 credit hours of tuition and fees. You will also have to supply a few hand tools, but campus activities' fees will be waived. For most of the summer, the work schedule will be 10 days on and 4 days off. While in the Lincoln-Omaha area, the class will commute everyday from the UNL campus to the research area and students will make their own living arrangement at home or on campus. In Ft Robinson, the crew will live in a supervised camp. All room and board costs for students will be covered during this portion of the summer!
