College may be a difficult transition for many of the young women going through the recruitment process each fall. Fortunately, the girls in Alpha Phi find a strong scholastic support system upon pledging the house. The Director of Scholarship promptly meets with the new pledges at the beginning of the semester to discuss course loads and suggest various upperclassmen who may have taken the courses for additional guidance. Many of the upperclassmen volunteer themselves as tutors in their strong areas.

PillowsAlthough they are not mandatory, the house has “study hours” one night of the week. In addition to being a great opportunity for the girls to network their strengths while studying, it serves as a motivator for the girls to be efficient with their coursework. The Director of Scholarship surprises the girls who come to study hours with their favorite treats on unannounced nights.

The chapter house is fortunate enough to have plenty of good study spots. A twenty-four hour quiet library in the basement is a sure spot for silence when needed. On nice days, the girls head out to the backyard. (We are the only sorority on campus to have one!) Some of the girls enjoy the back porch swing and picnic tables, or even head up to the sun deck to catch a few rays while reading up on organic chemistry.

Study Hours at the UnionTo make scholastics a bit more exciting, a different girl is nominated each week to receive the “Scholarship Soul Man.” If a girl in the house is having a difficult week crammed with tests, quizzes, and papers, the “Scholarship Soul Man” (a battery-operated dancing saxophone player) finds his way to her room where he sings her the blues and gets her through the week. We also have a “Brag Bag” where the girls share their sisters’ and their own accomplishments with the house to be announced each week.

Each semester begins with a scholarship banquet honoring the academic successes of the girls from the previous semester. Some of the awards presented include 4.0s, most improved GPA and most valuable pledge (MVP). We are proud to announce that not only does Alpha Phi Nu Chapter remain competitive with other top Alpha Phi chapters nationwide, but Alpha Phi Nu Chapter continues to find itself among the top three sorority GPAs on the Lincoln campus.

This past semester Alpha Phi Nu Chapter retained a 3.501 all-house GPA. We are proud of this accomplishment, and continue to strive for bigger and better things in the semesters to come.
