2007 Fall Ranger Challenge
On October 26th eighteen cadets left Lincoln to participate in the 2007 Ranger Challenge at Camp Dodge, Iowa. There were two teams of nine; Cadet Weander was the Alpha team leader and Cadet Thompson was the Bravo team leader. On the 27th cadets started their morning with an Army Physical Fitness Test. This is a three event physical performance test used to assess endurance. The cadets are scored on the number of push-ups they can complete in two minutes, the number of sit-ups they can perform in two minutes and how fast they can finish a two-mile run. The cadets are allowed only a ten minute rest period between each event.
The rest of the day consisted of teams competing in events such as the one-rope bridge, hand grenade assault school, orienteering patrolling, and the M16A1 rifle marksmanship. On the third and final day, the Ranger Challenge had only one event left - the 10K road march. Each team had to run ten kilometers carrying a rucksack, rifle, Load Bearing Equipment and kevlar.
Alpha team excelled in M16A1 rifle marksmanship, placing 6th and Bravo team excelled in patrolling placing 4th in the event. All of the cadets demonstrated great military proficiency in their tasks and also showed great physical endurance in the many demanding events.
2007 Fall Field Training Exercise (FTX)
The Big Red Battalion 2007 Fall FTX was held October 5-7 at the Greenleaf training site outside Hastings, NE. Cadets zeroed and qualified on the M16A2 service rifle, conducted a grenade assault course, and followed up with Squad Situation Exercises (STX). The cadets also conducted day and night land navigations and, on Sunday, conducted Military Operations Urban Terrain (MOUT) training. Click here for photos of the exercise.

Cadets on a 2, 3 or 4-year scholarship will contract by December 15th of their first semester in the ROTC program. These cadets must meet the following criteria:

Cadets in the Simultaneous Membership Program (SMP) contract during their MSII or MSIII year, dependent on meeting the aforementioned criteria. The Simultaneous Membership Program is designed to commission enlisted soldiers into the Active Army, National Guard or Army Reserves. These cadets continue to serve part-time--one weekend per month and two weeks each year--with their unit while going to school full time. As cadets, they become soldiers in training--a non-deployable asset until they graduate and receive their commission.
Non-scholarship/non-SMP cadets who enter the program as a academic sophomore or higher standing contract during their MSIII year. They must be determined medically qualified by DODMERB, pass the APFT and have completed the Army ROTC Leader's Training Course.
