Graduate Fellowships for Newly Admitted Students

Graduate students newly admitted to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln are eligible for a number of fellowships. All of these fellowships are awarded either by or through the academic departments. (There are no separate fellowship forms for new students to complete.) Not every fellowship is available every year.

Othmer Fellowships are intended to assist in recruiting exceptional scholars who are seeking a terminal degree (i.e., Ph.D., Ed.D., D.M.A., M.F.A.). Othmer Fellows will receive, in addition to the departmental assistantship, a $7,500 fellowship per year. Othmer Fellowships are renewable for up to three years, given continued excellent progress toward the degree. All graduate applicants newly admitted to a doctoral or MFA degree program are eligible for an Othmer Fellowship. To qualify, the department is expected to offer an assistantship stipend equal to the highest amount offered by the department to first-year students. The assistantship must be renewable for up to three years.
  • Newly admitted doctoral or MFA student.
  • Minimum GPA of 3.5 in previous degree.
  • Excellent letters of recommendation.
  • Student must be offered a department assistantship with a stipend equitable to those held by students not on the fellowship.

Richard H. Larson Fellowships are designed to assist departments with the recruitment of superior graduate students who enhance the diversity of the graduate population in the department and university. Each student should be individually evaluated as to whether she or he satisfies the listed qualifications for the fellowship. This evaluation should include consideration of whether the student will enhance diversity, including racial and ethnic diversity, that is important to the department and UNL. Larson Fellows will receive, in addition to the departmental assistantship, a $3,500 fellowship per year. Larson Fellowships are automatically renewable for a second year, given excellent progress toward the degree. Larson Fellowships may be offered in combination with other recruiting fellowships (e.g., Othmer or Chancellor's) where applicable.
  • The student's unique life experiences or educational background add an important aspect of diversity to the department or university.
