Alpha Xi Delta was founded in 1893 by ten young women at Lombard College, Galesburg, Illinois, who shared a vision and a dream of a national organization dedicated to the personal growth of women.
One of the oldest women's fraternities, Alpha Xi Delta is proud of its rich history.
As one of the ten founding fraternities of the National Panhellenic Conference, it
was Alpha Xi Delta's first NPC Chairman who wrote the Panhellenic Creed, which is
still recited on college campuses today.
Since that time more than 100 years ago, the spirit of Alpha Xi Delta has enriched
the lives of thousands of women throughout the world with its emphasis on lifelong
learning and lasting friendship. Now a national fraternity with more than 142,000
initiated members, Alpha Xi Delta has grown into a progressive and forward-thinking
organization with college chapters and alumnae associations throughout the United
States.
The ideals envisioned by our Founders are timeless and have remained constant
throughout the years, inspiring pride in each member to pursue individual
excellence.
The Founders left a great legacy - they taught us the value of education because it
would free us to achieve our goals and give us the power to be whatever we choose to
be. They taught us to support one another through shared experiences and
understanding. They taught us to serve others - to reach out to those less fortunate
to make their lives better.
It is these ideals of personal development, scholarship, friendship, and civic
responsibility that we embrace and bring to every Alpha Xi Delta member.
Through the efforts of Lulu Runge, a math teacher at the University of Nebraska -
Lincoln and an alumna of the Theta Chapter of Alpha Xi Delta, a group of 12 women
was installed as Rho Chapter on June 5, 1912. Alpha Xi Delta was the 11th Greek
organization at UNL.
The original Alpha Xi Delta house was located at 1527 M Street. After years of
fundraising, with the enduring guidance from Ms. Runge, the chapter house moved to
1619 R Street and became Rho Chapter's new home. The new house opened in the fall of
1929, just before Rush Week. An addition to the house was completed in 1968. In
1997, the property was named as a National Landmark due to its architectural
uniqueness.
Over the last five years, many changes have taken place inside the house:
- Ethernet Ports Added in Sleeping Rooms and Common Areas
- Air Conditioning
- Renovation of the Basement and 1st Floor
- Renovation of 2nd floor Bathrooms
- New carpeting on 2nd and 3rd Floors
Recruitment is our favorite time of year as we welcome new members and get to expand
our sisterhood!
The Alpha Xi Deltas are counting down the days until we have a chance to meet you on
August 20th!
Over the course of a few short weeks, Alpha Xi Delta new members begin to form bonds
of friendship that will last a lifetime. Many Alpha Xi Delta members, young and old,
say that their fondest memories of Alpha Xi Delta come from the time they spent as
new members. It is a time to learn about chapter life, our history, and Fraternity
programs, including academic achievement and philanthropy service.
Some facts about Alpha Xi Delta's new member program:
The new member period lasts eight weeks. New member meetings are held Sunday
evenings. New members also attend dinner and the chapter meeting held each Monday
night. New members are welcome to start showing their Alpha Xi Delta pride by wearing
letters as soon as they pledge.
Special activities include: Big Sis/Little Sis, Sneak, and Inspiration Week
Rho Chapter offers over 40 officer positions through which members can learn leadership skills, responsibility, and what it takes to run an organization of 115 members.

Alpha Xi Delta sisterhood is visible everyday in the little things like studying together, helping a sister with a problem, or watching Grey's Anatomy. Bonds are formed over meals, in class, and hanging out. Girls go to football games together and help each other dress up for our theme parties. The Alpha Xi Delta bond will last a lifetime.
