The Honor Jazz Weekend is designed to give outstanding high school (freshman through senior) musicians a comprehensive playing and learning experience. Festival participants are chosen through a recorded audition (tape or CD) process. Students attending the festival have the opportunity to be involved in small jazz combos, as well as a large jazz ensemble. Students also participate in master classes with University of Nebraska–Lincoln faculty and featured guests, learn about jazz history, composition, and improvisation.
The featured ensemble, The Matt Wilson Quartet, will work with the Honor Jazz Weekend participants in masterclasses and rehearsals. Ken Waxman of jazzweekly.com says, "After a while, it’s embarrassing to keep repeating it, but Matt Wilson has emerged as one of the most accomplished—if not the most accomplished—inside/outside drummer of the 21st century."
New this year: high school freshman through seniors are eligible to audition.
