Jazz Ensembles

450x338

Paul Haar, director

Jazz Ensemble I is the University's showcase jazz organization and one of the School of Music's most visible performing groups.  The ensemble performs all styles of music from Duke Ellington to the contemporary artists of today.  Former members of Jazz Ensemble I include Victor Lewis, Laurie Frink, and Matt Wallace.  In addition to numerous performances in the Lincoln and Omaha area, Jazz Ensemble I has been heard on Nebraska Public Radio's Jazz Set with Branford Marsalis.

The jazz curriculum at UNL is designed to give students a strong foundation and versatility in the areas of jazz performance, composition, and education.  Courses in jazz improvisation and jazz styles are available, as are small group (combo) performing experiences.

Jazz Ensemble II is a vital component of the UNL jazz curriculum.  Through intensive rehearsal and performance, students are encouraged to develop and nurture the fundamental skills necessary to perform a wide variety of repertoire, and to engage in the creative process through improvisation.  Jazz Ensemble II is specifically designed to motivate and inform music educators and aspiring teachers through innovative programming and pedagogical methods.

Membership in the jazz ensembles is determined by audition each semester.  Music majors as well as non-majors are encouraged to try out.
