Camp Dates: June 27- July 1, 2010
A jazz band camp for students entering 9th grade through the end of 12th grade (including graduates). The University of Nebraska–Lincoln (UNL) Summer Jazz Camp offers students the opportunity to receive intensive instruction in jazz performance and pedagogy from world-renowned artist and educators. This camp presents opportunities to study jazz history, jazz improvisation, jazz theory. Campers will also have small combo and big band playing opportunities. The camp is geared towards students that have experience playing in jazz ensembles who wish to improve their skills as a jazz performer.
Proposed instrumentation for the camp big bands are five trumpets, five saxophones, four trombones, two drummers, two bass players, two pianists and two guitarists. Applicants should have some experience playing in a middle school or high school jazz ensemble and have a strong desire to improve as a jazz musician.
IDIOMATIC STUDY ON YOUR INSTRUMENT
You will begin each day with experts on your instrument discussing ways to improve your playing, idiomatic concepts, technique, equipment and history.
JAZZ HISTORY
Jackie McLean once said, "Everything new can be found in the
past." Jazz history sessions will present the history of
this great art form in an entertaining and informative way.
These sessions will include films, recording and help lists
for guided study after you leave the camp.
JAZZ THEORY
From the building blocks spring forth the tools for creativity.
Jazz theory will teach you about the "nuts and bolts" of
composition, arranging and theory as used in jazz music.
You will be guided by some on the most recognized educators
in the field of performance and composition.
JAZZ IMPROVISATION
Each day you will be able to put your study to work in daily
improvisation workshops. You will discuss ways to navigate chord changes,
open up your musical vocabulary, tune learning and much, much more.
SMALL COMBOS
Small combos are an excellent way to create with others. Groups
ranging from 5-8 players will work daily on jazz standards and new arrangements.
Groups will be coached by our renowned faculty.
BIG BAND
All participants will play in the jazz camp big band. You will
study some of the finest literature available and learn invaluable techniques
that you can take back to your own school big band.
There will be nightly concerts and jam sessions with faculty, guests and students.
All campers are encouraged to live on campus during the camp to take full advantage of evening work sessions and planned activities. Students choosing the resident camper package live in a campus residence hall and dine in the hall's cafeteria. Each floor is supervised by live-in UNL student counselors. Day campers may purchase a meals package.
Resident Camper Package:
Housing is provided in a city campus residence hall supervised
by UNL student counselors and residence hall staff. Meals are
provided in the camper's assigned residence hall cafeteria.
Day Camper Package:
No meals or lodging are provided with this
package. There are many fast food and full service restaurants
within easy walking distance of the UNL campus. A campus parking permit
is available for an additional fee.
Day Camper with Meals Package:
Afternoon and evening meals are provided through lunch on the
last day of the camp with this package. A campus parking
permit is available for an additional fee.

* Please note: Meals are provided for resident campers & day campers who purchase the meals package. A detailed final schedule will be mailed to all camp participants after the registration deadline.
