Scholarships and Financial Aid

Departmental scholarships are available to enrolled students in the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders.  Some requirements that apply to the awards are as follows:

1. The applicant must be admitted to the Department of Special Education and Communication Disorders:

Undergraduate - Must have a declared major in the Department of Special Education or have been formally admitted to the pre-professional program in Communication Disorders.

Graduate - Must have been admitted or provisionally admitted to either a graduate degree program, professional degree program or a graduate-level endorsement program

In this context, professional Au.D. students are considered grad students and may apply for this financial aid. (Provisional admission must not be the result of scholastic difficulties.)
2. University employees are not eligible to receive scholarships.  This restriction does not include work-study, undergraduate, research or graduate assistants.
3. The Selection Committee will review all applications using a formal rating procedure based on GPA, letters of reference, and other criteria as determined by the Committee.

4. All application files for scholarships or financial aid must include:

a. The completed application form. This.pdf form can be printed and filled out by hand. If you do not have this free software on your personal computer (most UNL labs already have the software), just click on the button below and follow the easy, three step instructions for installation.  Once you have the software, the file will open automatically or you will need to save it to your desktop, depending on how your computer preferences are set up.

b. Three letters of recommendation from non-family sources.  For current college students, at least two references must be from College of Education and Human Sciences or other faculty members.  The third should be from a teacher or other professional who has worked with you in a school setting.  In all cases, references should report academic performance and capability and provide information related to the applicant's professional promise.  COMMUNICATION DISORDERS MAJORS ARE NOT REQUIRED TO SUBMIT RECOMMENDATION LETTERS

c. An official transcript of all college-level work.  You must contact the UNL Registrar's Office at 472-3763 or go to the Service Counter at 107 Administration Building (there is no charge for a copy of your transcript but a new UNL transcript must be submitted every time you apply).  Please have the transcript sent to the attention of Machelle Harrell, 202 Barkley Center, East Campus (0732).

NOTE: Students must complete one new application form and obtain a current, updated transcript from UNL each time they apply for a scholarship. Previous transcripts for any schooling prior to UNL may be used for a new application if they meet the requirements stated above. If you choose to use a transcript from any other school (not UNL), please make that notation on your application (by attaching a note or indicating in pencil), and we will use your previously submitted transcript(s). For SPED Majors: New letters of recommendation must be submitted with each application.

5. If your application is incomplete, you will be notified of deficiencies and given 10 days to complete your file.

6. Information made available to the Scholarship Committee will be treated in confidence in accordance with University policies and procedures.  Application records will be destroyed when the applicant graduates.

7. Deadlines are October 15 for spring scholarships and March 1 for fall scholarships every year. Applicants will be notified by letter in December for spring and in April for fall of their selection, if they are chosen for a scholarship.
