I received my BS in communication disorders from the University of Nebraska at Omaha and my MS in communication disorders for the University of Nebraska at Kearney. I worked as a clinical speech pathologist for 5 years before choosing to attend the University of Nebraska at Lincoln for my Ph.D. program. My areas of interest are AAC and acquired neurogenic communication disorders. I met Dr. Beukelman and a couple of his doctoral students at a state convention two years ago and after talking with them decided to look into the program. Dr. Beukelman and the students were excited about the research they were involved with and the UNL program in general. However, my situation is unique in that I live in Kearney with my family. I was worried that I would not be able to pursue a doctoral program because I did not live in Lincoln. The department worked with me to develop a schedule that would meet the needs of my doctoral program and the needs of my family. Pursuing my doctoral degree is the best decision my husband and I could have made. The program is wonderful. I am involved in unique research opportunities in the field of ACC as well as research in traumatic brain injury. I will be honest, it is a lot harder than I imagined. However, being part of the research process and exploring new AAC technology very rewarding.
