Sarah Wallace is a third year doctoral student at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Sarah earned a Bachelor’s degree in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology in 2003 from Miami University in Ohio and a Master’s degree. in Speech-Language Pathology in 2005 from Western Michigan University with a certificate in Gerontology Studies. She completed her Clinical Fellowship (CF) at Quality Living Inc. in Omaha, Nebraska during the first two years of her doctoral program.

Sarah is focusing her doctoral program on the area of aphasia, traumatic brain injury, and other acquired neurogenic communication disorders, with additional focus on augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) under the direction of Drs. Karen Hux and David Beukelman. Sarah is interested in the psychosocial impact of communication disorders on the rehabilitation process and quality of life concerns for individuals with communication disorders.

Sarah chose to pursue her doctorate at UNL because of the supportive, collaborative, and friendly environment created by the staff, students, and faculty. She was drawn to UNL after meeting Dr. Hux and Dr. Beukelman, as well as many of the current doctoral students at an ASHA convention. Early on the faculty made an effort to develop a program that allowed Sarah to complete her certification (CF) in a unique environment as part of her doctoral program. Now in her third year, she appreciates the many opportunities available outside her regular academic coursework, including playing an active role in a variety of research projects and publications, and co-teaching some graduate and undergraduate courses.
