Malinda Eccarius, Ph.D. is the director of the Deaf Education program. She teaches academic courses and supervises field experience, research and student teaching. The Deaf Education program uses an all-distance format to prepare teachers of students who are deaf or hard of hearing. The program curriculum prepares teachers for many different environments, but emphasizes providing services for deaf or hard of hearing students in rural areas. Dr. Eccarius has taught students who are deaf or hard of hearing since 1971, serving as a self contained classroom instructor, resource teacher, parent infant advisor, gifted deaf program curriculum coordinator, teacher of students with multiple challenges, and an academic tutor. She has also spent 12 years as an academic diagnostician on the multidisciplinary evaluation team at the Boys Town National Research Hospital, where she has served as Educational Services Coordinator, with responsibilities including educational outreach, parent sign language classes, video and website development. Dr. Eccarius has participated for 15 years collaborative curriculum teams for public school districts, including the Omaha Metro Area Consortium, and the Southeast Nebraska Regional Program, which provide summer learning experiences for area deaf and hard of hearing students. Dr. Eccarius has served as adjunct staff at Texas A&M University, the University of Iowa, the University of Texas, and Creighton University. Her bachelors degree in Theatre Arts is from the University of Iowa. She received teacher certification from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, her masters degree in deaf education from the University of Nebraska and her Ph.D. from UNL. Her primary research interest is in visual literacy.
