Dr. Scheffler directs the Speech-Language and Hearing Clinic in the Department. She also serves as principal investigator and director for various state and federal grants in special education and communication disorders. Dr. Scheffler serves as a consultant for a number of state, regional, and national organizations. She has presented papers at federal and regional conferences on topics such as systems change and collaboration, inclusive teacher education practices, recruitment and retention of teachers, and grant writing. She serves as a standing panel member for discretionary grant competitions for the U.S. Office of Education, Office of Special Education Programs. Her current research interests lie in the areas of education policy and systems change; alignment of standards, assessment, and accountability systems across various levels of education; and the role of state education agencies in educational reform.

Dr. Scheffler teaches courses and seminars in the areas of characteristics of exceptional learners, specific learning disabilities, and intervention strategies to accommodate students with disabilities in the general education classroom.
