Speech-Language and Hearing Clinic

The UNL Barkley Speech-Language and Hearing Clinic is located in the Barkley Memorial Center on the University of Nebraska-Lincoln's East Campus at 42nd and Holdrege Streets. The Center was built with monies from the Barkley Trust established by William E. and Edna M. Barkley. Services for individuals with speech, language, hearing and other disabilities are available as a part of academic programs in Speech-Language Pathology and Audiology.
  • Services available include hearing evaluations, hearing aid selection, habilitation and rehabilitation for persons who are deaf and hard of hearing. The Sertoma Hearing Aid Bank is available to assist clients who need hearing aids but lack the resources to buy them.
Audiology
  • The Clinic provides team assessment and treatment services for individuals of all ages with speech, language, and hearing
    disorders.
Speech-Language Pathology
  • Assessment and community-based program consultation are available for children and adults with special needs. Participating disciplines include: Speech-Language Pathology, Audiology, Special Education, and Psychology. When needed, medical consultants are available.

Autism Services for Preschool
Supplemental services are available to preschool children that have been diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) or Pervasive Developmental Disorder: Not Otherwise Specified (PPD:NOS). Parent involvement and consultation with other service providers are available upon request.
Adult Neurogenic Services
Individual and group treatment is available for individuals with communication challenges resulting from stroke or acquired brain injury. A group for people with aphasia focuses on functional communication skills and using compensatory strategies for community living. The program is appropriate for individuals no longer eligible for hospital-based rehabilitation but who continue to benefit from long-term comprehensive speech-language therapy.

Language-Literacy Groups
This program provides language literacy intervention services for school-age children with language-based learning difficulties. It is designed to assist schools in providing language literacy experiences for children that will help maximize their learning and thereby increase academic success and social functioning. All aspects of language (listening, speaking, reading, writing) are addressed in an integrated manner and in a meaningful context of use.

Alternative and Augmentative Communication (AAC) Services
AAC evaluation and treatment services are for people who can not use speech to meet all of their communication needs. Services include: assessment and implementation of computer access options for writing, vocational, and leisure needs; speech intelligibility assessment and monitoring; and evaluation and design of augmentative and alternative communication systems. The AAC clinical program works closely with other agencies to ensure that needs are met across environments. The program has state-of-the-art AAC technology available within the Barkley AAC training laboratory.
Adults with Language / Literacy Challenges
Services are available for individuals in post-secondary education with language and literacy challenges. Assessment related to the identification of accommodations for learning as well as individual sessions for those wanting specific language and/or literacy intervention are provided.

English Language Learning / Accent Modification
Services are offered to individuals who would like to adapt their accent and pronunciation closer to that of Standard American English. The individual needs of each student are the starting point for class sessions. The number of participants in this service is limited. Each participant receives individual instruction and group interaction. Topics may include figurative language, accent modification, English vocabulary learning, and exposure to American culture. Groups are filled on a first come-first served basis.
Aural Rehabilitation
Aural rehabilitation is available for individuals with varying degrees of hearing impairments. Services available include but are not limited to speech reading, speech therapy and auditory training for individuals with cochlear implants. This service is available for children and adults and is appropriate as primary treatment or supplemental treatment to school services.

Fees

The Barkley Speech-Language and Hearing Clinic charges fees based on services provided. We accept rates from "Fee for Service" insurance plans and will file insurance claim forms for clients. We are a provider for most health care companies. Please note: The Clinic accepts Medicare and Medicaid for audiology services only. We are not providers for Medicare or Medicaid for speech or language services. Individuals who receive language services who are Medicare or Medicaid participants will be responsible for payment for services provided. Physician referral is required for Medicare and Medicaid prior to receiving services. Clients who have financial needs may apply for fee reduction upon request.
The clinic is also an approved service provider for special education and related services through the Nebraska Department of Education. School districts may contract with the Clinic to provide services for individuals birth-21.

Off-Campus

Clients are also seen for evaluation and therapy at off-campus sites.
