Pre-Professional Program Overview

The first step to becoming a highly qualified teacher of students who are deaf or hard of hearing is to obtain a general education teaching certificate. Undergraduate education majors at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln can begin their deaf education requirements BEFORE completing their undergraduate program. In addition to meeting with the deaf education program director and arranging for practicum experiences with children who are deaf or hard of hearing, students enroll in these courses.

Undergraduate students interested in teaching students who are deaf or hard of hearing can get a head start by completing the pre-professional deaf education concentration along with their initial teaching certificate.

Students develop proficiency in American Sign Language, participate in practicum with children who are deaf or hard of hearing, and complete coursework.

The benefits to the pre-professional program include:

  • Fewer courses to complete for the post graduate endorsement in deaf education.
  • A chance to get some experience in the field before making final decisions.
  • Room in a master’s degree program for specialization in an important area such as early childhood education, transition, or behavior disorders.
  • An opportunity to meet and work with other students who are also interested in deaf education through Friends of the Deaf Community and interaction with graduate students and the program advisor
