The faculty members in special education are leaders in the field of special education. They care deeply about the field of special education and the students they teach. Special education faculty members use their knowledge and skills to spark the learning you’ll need to be successful. Suzanne E. Kemp, Ph.D. is a lecturer in the Department of Special Education Communication Disorders.  She has spent many years working with students with emotional and behavioral disorders both as a teacher and administrator.  Dr. Kemp has served on numerous state and national committees whose mission is to provide better education to students with disabilities.  Because of her expertise in school management, alternative teaching methods, and innovative administrative leadership, she is a much sought after presenter and consultant to school districts, agencies, and organizations.  In 1999 Dr. Kemp received the Exemplary Service Award from the Child and Adolescent Mental Health Coalition.

John W. Maag, Ph.D. is a professor in the Division of Special Education where he specializes in the education and treatment of children and adolescents with emotional and behavioral disorders.  He is a nationally recognized behavioral consultant on best practices for managing resistance and improving relationships with others.  Dr. Maag has published over 90 articles and book chapters as well as authoring four books—one of which, Parenting without Punishment, won a Parent’s Choice award.  He was also the recipient of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln Distinguished Teaching Award.  A licensed psychotherapist, Dr. Maag is a frequent public speaker and consulting editor to numerous journals.

J. Ron Nelson, Ph.D. is an associate professor and co-director of the Center for At-Risk Children’s Services at the University of Nebraska—Lincoln.  Dr. Nelson has over 20 years experience in the field of special education as a teacher, technical assistance provider, and professor. He received the 2000 Distinguished Initial Career Research Award by the Council for Exceptional Children. Dr. Nelson’s research career includes over 12 million dollars in external funding, the publication of more than 100 articles, book chapters, and books that focus on serving children at risk of school failure and research issues. He has developed a number of behavior and literacy interventions that have been recognized by the U.S. Department of Education.

Robert Reid, Ph.D. is a professor of special education and former Visiting Professor at Flinders University of South Australia.  Among his honors is the Jeannie C. Baliles award for mental health research.  His is a nationally recognized expert in the area of attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and appeared on the ABC 20/20 television program discussing this topic.  He has over 20 years experience as a classroom teacher and university professor as well as publishing over 70 journal articles and book chapters.  He is the senior author of the highly regarded book, Cognitive Strategy Instruction for Students with Learning Disabilities.

Ellin B. Siegel, Ph.D. is recognized for her expertise in special education, severe disabilities with focus on individuals who may have multiple disabilities, autism spectrum disorder (ASD), deaf blindness, and intellectual impairments. She assumes national leadership roles such as being an advisory board member of Project AIM focused on national training in ASD and as a member of National Joint Committee for the Communication Needs of Persons with Severe Disabilities. The Nebraska Autism Society of America chapter awarded her the outstanding teacher award in 2000.
