Braille Codes and Material Adaptations for Students with Visual Impairments- This course provides the student with basic skills in literary braille transcription and codes. Students will acquire competence in reading and writing braille skills in the use of the Perkins braille writer and the slate and stylus are also included. Techniques for braille instruction of children and adults, including those with multiple disabilities, are addressed. Intermediate Braille Codes and Instructional Material Adaptations for Students with Visual Impairments - Participants in the course will demonstrate mastery of Nemeth Code (mathematics) and use of the abacus for teaching mathematics to blind learners. They will complete basic activities in braille formatting, foreign language codes, music braille, and identification of braille technology devices and resources. Participants will demonstrate basic functions using the Braille 'N Speak, and they will achieve a reading rate of at least 30 words per minute in literary braille. | 3 |

An introduction to the history and development of the profession is included. The needs of specific populations such as people with low vision and individuals with additional disabilities will be discussed. | SPED 890E | Institute on Deaf Blindness - This workshop provides educators with pertinent knowledge and skills to provide meaningful instruction to children and youth with deaf-blindness and multiple disabilities. Focus is on areas of assessment, planning, teaching strategies, and intervention. National and local presenters provide content. |
