The major purposes of the Black Graduate Student Association shall be to serve as an association among students of African descent who are enrolled in graduate and/or professional school at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, and to provide a support network, whereas these scholars (students) can garner and direct their individual as well as collective resources for the betterment of all people of African descent through educational instruction, mentorship, research, and service.

Frantz Fanon informs us that: "Each generation must, out of relative obscurity, find its destiny, fulfill it, or betray it." With the legacy of our foreparents' work and struggle in mind,we, as scholars and professionals of African descent, seek a destiny in which our work and struggle is relevant to the conditions of African and other oppressed people. It is toward this noble end that we, as members of the Black Graduate Student Association, direct our mission and lodge our hope so to be ever vigilant in pressing toward the goals of self-determination, social justice, and human equality. Ever mindful of Henry Dumas' words: "We have a journey to take and little time..."
