Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Mental Measurements Yearbook?

The Mental Measurements Yearbook (MMY) includes timely, consumer-oriented test reviews, providing evaluative information to promote and encourage informed test selection. Typical MMY test entries include descriptive information and one or two reviews written by professionals in selected fields.

What is Tests In Print?

Tests in Print (TIP) serves as a comprehensive bibliography to all known commercially available tests that are currently in print in the English language. Information includes test purpose, test publisher, in-print status, price, test acronym, intended test population, administration times, publication date(s), and test author(s). Tests in Print also guides readers to candidly critical test reviews published in the Mental Measurements Yearbook series.

What is Test Reviews Online?

Test Reviews Online is a service that provides access to the same test reviews that appear in the Mental Measurement Yearbook series. Information is available on over 2,000 tests beginning with reviews published in The Ninth Mental Measurements Yearbook (1985). The most current test reviews for each test may be downloaded for $15 per test title. Test reviews include:

  • descriptive information (i.e., test purpose, test publisher, price, test acronym, intended test population, administration times, publication date(s), test authors, and in-print status)
  • evaluative information summarizing technical properties of the test (i.e., reliability, validity) when available

  • How do I determine if the Buros Institute has reviewed a test?

You can view the complete list of available test reviews by clicking on the "test reviews online" button on the Buros webpage. At our site, you will be able to search the Buros Institute's database for test reviews by keyword, by alphabet, or by category. Keyword searches may be limited to any of six potential areas including title, publisher, author, purpose, acronym, or scores.

I am searching for the review of a recent test, but cannot find it on Test Reviews Online. Did the Buros Institute choose not to review it?

Relatively new tests may be under review for the next edition of the Mental Measurements Yearbook. You will find information on the current status of many tests by listing your test's name in the keyword search field and examining the "Notes" section. If you are unable to find the test name at the Buros Institute's website, you may want to contact the test publisher, access a specialized database (such as PsycInfo) at your library, or check with the ETS website.

You also may try checking our Tests Reviews Online service periodically because test reviews are available prior to publication in the Mental Measurements Yearbook series. Because the Buros Institute reviews only commercially available tests, research instruments and proprietary tests are not part of our review process.

It is also possible that the publisher has not provided us with copies of their testing materials that are necessary to conduct a test review. In these situations, we are unable to provide a test review. As of The Fourteenth Mental Measurements Yearbook, reviews are not obtained when tests do not provide sufficient evidence of their developmental history or technical characteristics.

What is the "scores index" and where can I find it on Test Reviews Online?

The "scores index" is a listing of the scored parts of a test. Because the actual constructs of a test are often unclear, the "scores index" was created to clarify the subparts that test authors are seeking to assess. For example, some personnel tests will evaluate areas such as work commitment, career beliefs, risk taking, etc. Although the Test Reviews Online search engine does not list the scores index, it does search these fields when you choose the "All Fields" or the "Scores Index" field. You can obtain a listing of the "scores index" for any reviewed instrument by obtaining the test review through Test Reviews Online, the Mental Measurements Yearbook, or the Tests in Print book series.

I can't find the test I'm looking for -- where should I look next?

If you cannot find a test by searching Test Reviews Online through the Buros website, you may wish to search the Educational Testing Service (ETS) website. ETS maintains information (but not evaluations) on over 20,000 commercial and research instruments. If you know the publisher of the test, you may wish to contact them and ask for the specific details you wish to examine.

Can I access a list of all the tests that have been evaluated by the Buros Institute?

You can access and view a cumulative listing of the most current reviews for any test that has had reviews published in the Ninth Mental Measurements Yearbook (published in 1985) through the current date by choosing the "Cumulative MMY Index" button on the Buros Institute's webpage. Separate listings by different editions of the Mental Measurements Yearbook are also available on this page. You should note that reviews of older versions of a test are not available through Test Reviews Online due to the confusion multiple reviews might create for users. Older reviews of tests remain available in previously published versions of the Mental Measurements Yearbook series.

I am hoping to find a scale to measure a particular construct, but I do not know the titles of any specific tests that measure it. How do I begin my search using the Buros Institute's website?

From the Buros Center for Testing webpage select Test Reviews Online. You will have the option of searching for a construct alphabetically, with a category search to narrow the topic, or with a keyword search. If you select to search for a construct with a keyword search, selecting only the "scores" field will identify tests that include this word as a scored component part of the test.

Is it possible to search by test author or publisher?

Yes, after typing the author or publisher's name into the search field, simply select the "author" or "publisher" button on the search engine of Test Reviews Online.

I am looking for a valid assessment of anxiety to use in my clinic. What assessments are reviewed that measure anxiety?

If you know a certain type of assessment you are looking for, but do not know a specific title, you can search our Test Reviews Online database by entering a specific keyword or phrase (e.g., anxiety). The search engine will examine all tests with the word "anxiety" in the selected field(s), and the results will be displayed on your screen. If you wish to search for an exact phrase or word order, enter the words in quotation marks.

I know the acronym of a test, but I do not know its full title. Will I have trouble finding its test review on your website?

When using the search engine in Test Reviews Online, enter the acronym into the search field, check the acronym field below, and click the "find" button. If you are not able to locate the acronym, try shortening the acronym. You also should be aware that acronyms are only listed if the test author or publisher has made use of the acronym when referring to the test or if the test is widely known by that acronym. Note that some acronyms are used by more than one test.

What pieces of information can I use to search for a test review?

The search engine in Test Reviews Online offers keyword searches for title, purpose, publisher, acronym, author, and score. The default selection is All Fields.

I don't have specific criteria in mind for a test but want to gain an overall impression of the types of tests that might exist in a general area. Where should I start?

One of the three options available to you is to search by test category. This type of search will provide a listing of 18 broad subject areas and should help you find assessments in your area without narrowing down options too quickly.

I am having trouble downloading or opening a test review that I purchased. Where can I find help to access the review?

Within the Test Reviews Online webpage there is a "Problems?" button on the left side of the screen. Simply click that button, fill out the requested information about your problem, and we will contact you as soon as possible (usually during the next business day) to resend the test review(s) you have ordered.

What payment options do you offer for Test Reviews Online?

You may use either Visa, MasterCard, or Discover to purchase reviews online. All credit card transactions are encrypted and processed by VeriSign.

Is it possible to have reviews faxed to me instead of ordering them immediately through Test Reviews Online?

Yes. Contact the Buros Institute at (402) 472-6203 for information or leave your phone number on our answering machine. We will return your phone call as soon as possible. Fax transactions must be manually processed and are usually delivered by the next business day. You may obtain reviews via the Fax Service from any edition of the Mental Measurements Yearbook (e.g., reviews published prior to the 9th MMY).

What kind of tests are reviewed by the Buros Institute?

The Buros Institute publishes descriptions and critical reviews of commercially available English language tests. A test qualifies for review if it meets the general criteria of providing at least a minimal level of psychometric data (e.g., development history, reliability estimates, validity evidence).

How do I obtain an actual test after I've read the review?

The Buros Institute does not publish, distribute, or administer tests. To acquire tests or testing materials, you will need contact the test publisher. Publishers' addresses (and in many cases phone numbers, email addresses, and websites) are available by searching the publisher field on Test Reviews Online. The Tests in Print book series also provides contact information for test publishers.

What is the total number of published tests reviewed during the history of the Buros Institute of Mental Measurements?

Reviews of over 11,000 tests (or revisions of tests) have been published by the Buros Institute from the beginnings of the Institute (1935) through the present day.

Will you explain what a typical review is like? What kind of information will I get with my purchase of a test review through your online service?

Typical reviews provide descriptive information about a test, often discuss its developmental history, and evaluate its technical characteristics. Test reviewers often will offer their own commentary along with providing specific psychometric evaluations. For most tests, reviews are completed by two independent reviewers. A sample review is available on this website.

I am a researcher looking to use a test in my next study. I have narrowed down my list of possibilities, but cannot decide which one to use. Would you be able to give me advice on which one would work best with my research?

The Buros Institute does not recommend specific tests to agencies or individuals. However, you may find our test reviews helpful in making the choice of which tests to select from what is sometimes a large range of testing options.

I am the author of a new (or revised) test. How can I have my test listed in a Buros publication?

If your test is commercially available and has not been listed or reviewed in a previous Buros publication, please contact the Buros Institute at bimm@unl.edu. All commercially available tests known to us are listed in Tests in Print (and included on our Test Reviews Online search engine). However, only tests that provide minimal psychometric documentation (e.g., development history, reliability estimates, validity evidence) are eligible for review in the Mental Measurements Yearbook series.

I am the author of a test that was reviewed by the Buros Institute. How can I obtain a copy of the review?

The Buros Institute is pleased to provide a courtesy copy of our reviews to test authors. To make arrangements for sending you a review by email attachment, please contact the Buros Institute via phone or email.

Who qualifies to review tests for the Buros Institute of Mental Measurements?

To qualify to review tests for the Buros Institute, individuals must have completed their terminal degrees (e.g., Ph.D., Psy.D., Ed.D.). Reviewers are selected for their specialized content knowledge and their training in the fields of testing and measurement.

How can I become a reviewer for the Mental Measurements Yearbook?

You will be asked for identifying information and for your specific areas of interest.

Is it possible to request the Buros Institute to review a specific test?

The Buros Institute reviews commercially available English language tests meeting sufficient technical standards that are provided to us by test publishers. Tests developed as research instruments only are not subject to review. If you wish to check whether a specific test has been reviewed, our search engine should provide updated status information.

Now that test reviews are available online, will Buros continue to publish the Mental Measurements Yearbook and Tests in Print?

Yes, the Mental Measurements Yearbook and Tests in Print series will continue to be available in print form and through electronic databases such as Ovid/SilverPlatter.

Where can I find the products and services of the Buros Center for Testing other than this website?

You may wish to contact your local library and ask if they have the latest editions of the Mental Measurements Yearbook and Tests in Print series. If they do not have a copy of these books, you may wish to contact your local university or college library.

Why is the website divided between Buros Institute of Mental Measurements and Buros Institute for Assessment Consultation and Outreach?

How to cite reviews from the Buros Institute's
    Test Reviews Online

The Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, Sixth Edition (2010) recommends that citations to online materials provide title, date, internet address, and author names of the reference. Reviews retrieved from Test Reviews Online will have a specific eight-digit number attached to them (e.g., 18192839) listed above the test name. The first two digits of this eight-digit number convey the specific edition of the Mental Measurements Yearbook (MMY). "18xxxxxx" indicates the 18th MMY, "17xxxxxx" the 17th, etc.

Here is the suggested citation format for reviews obtained through Test Reviews Online for different editions of the Mental Measurements Yearbook (MMY):
