Dr. Kirkland has served the educational, personal, social and career-related needs of students throughout his professional career. For five years, he served as a placement counselor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha. He then went on to become an academic advisor for undeclared students at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln. Dr. Kirkland also served a counselor in the Counseling Center, addressing the academic, personal, social and career-related concerns of students for six years. After serving one year as a career counselor in the Office of Career Services, he was promoted to assistant director, serving as the liaison to the College of Business Administration and overseeing the career related concerns of students of color. He currently serves as the advisor for the Students of Color Career Advisory Committee and is a liaison to the Division of General Studies.

Dr. Kirkland also served as a program coordinator of the Whittier Alternative School Program within the Lincoln Public Schools. He organized an educational program within the building for students who had been removed from their classroom for attitudinal and/or social adjustment problems. He provided activities to promote positive attitude and behavior and helped students keep up with class assignments that were provided by classroom teachers. He also served as the sophomore basketball coach at Lincoln High School for 5 years.
