How is UNL Career Services responding to the economic downturn?

As the media reports the country's economic downturn, students may wonder about job prospects. Career Services is aware of these concerns and continues to reach out to students and employers.

Employers are still hiring! They have listed jobs in Husker Hire Link, established campus interview dates, and registered for spring career fairs. Nebraska's primary industries, agriculture and insurance, are well represented. Other industries are also participating - retail, engineering, education, construction, information technology, etc. State and federal government agencies and non-profit organizations are involved as well.

With participation somewhat lower than last year, Career Services staff is calling, emailing, and visiting employers to encourage them to recruit UNL students. Our efforts focus on three employer groups: those with a history of hiring UNL students, local employers, and non-profit/government employers. New employers receive a welcome email from our staff and often a personal phone call and/or a copy of our Employer Guide. Career Services staff also collaborates with UNL Colleges and participates in Chamber of Commerce and economic development groups. Contact us to learn about specific employer outreach efforts - if we are not already working with them, we will reach out!

Seniors and Graduating Students

  • Your resume and cover letters must be in top shape. With increased competition for positions, application materials must be outstanding. Bring in your drafts for our review.
  • A mock interview helps you effectively convey your strengths and talents in person. Our career counselors provide mock interviews; Mock Interview Day brings employers to campus as volunteer interviewers.
  • Ask yourself, "what could make me a better candidate by graduation?" Perhaps take a UNL software class , or volunteer in an organization in your field. Seek an internship or ask for more responsibility in your student job to enhance your skills.
  • Go to the career fair (and regional career fairs) and meet with a variety of employers. Some of the best job prospects can be found in non-profit, government, and smaller organizations.
  • You may be considering graduate school. Graduate school allows you to focus on an area of academic interest and should not be used to delay a job search. Consider your career goals, career outcomes for graduates, and the cost of graduate school.

Students with Several Semesters Until Graduation

  • You may be tempted to switch your major into something you believe is more "stable." However, the employment outlook for different careers changes. Pick a major and career to utilize your skills, interests, and values. Career assessments and career counseling may help with your decision.
  • Gain career-related experience, whether from student jobs, internships, volunteer experiences, student organizations, or research projects. Consistently look for ways to improve your marketability. Our career counselors can help you brainstorm possibilities.
  • Learn about a wide range of employers-come to career fairs, attend student organization meetings, make contact with classroom guest speakers.
