Major/Career Exploration Assessments and Web Resources

EXPLORING WHO YOU ARE THROUGH CAREER ASSESSMENTS

Career Services offers a variety of assessments to help students and alumni clarify their interests, skills, and values.  Students are strongly encouraged to discuss the results of any of these assessments with a career counselor.

The following assessments are free of charge

  • O*Net "Skills Search" allows you to explore and identify your skills, with an opportunity to consider careers related to your skills.
  • Career Cruising offers Career Matchmaker, an interactive survey to help you find careers related to your interests. You can then use Career Cruising to explore those careers. A password is required for entry into the site. Call Career Services at 472-3145 for the password and username.

The following assessments require a fee (meet with a Career Counselor to arrange to take these assessments).

  • The Campbell Interest and Skill Survey is designed to relate your interests and skills to options for careers and majors. Information on fields of study related to your skills and interests is also provided.
  • The Strong Interest Inventory measures your interests and provides a profile of your results that can help guide you toward rewarding careers, work activities, education programs, and leisure activities.

EXPLORING ACADEMIC MAJORS & CAREERS

  • Career Guide to UNL Undergraduate Majors provides information about recent UNL graduates and interns by major.
  • What Can I Do With This Major/Degree? Provides general information about career fields as they relate to common college majors.
  • The MonsterCampus Major to Career Converter helps undergraduates better understand career options related to different academic majors. The resource also allows users to conduct job searches based on job titles related to their majors.
  • MyMajors can provide useful advice on college and university majors in which others with your interests and achievements might succeed.
  • The Occupational Outlook Handbook is an informational resource for occupations you may be considering for your future career. It provides information on the nature of the work, working conditions, employment, training, qualifications and advancement, job outlook, earnings, related occupations, and additional sources of information.
  • CareerVoyages is designed to provide information on high growth, high demand occupations along with the skills and education needed to attain those jobs.
  • SeeTheJob.com provides short video interviews with professionals in unique and interesting careers.
  • The New York Times - College links to recent articles related to various areas of study.
  • CareerOverview.com offers a wealth of useful and reliable career, job and employment information provided by the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics.
  • What Color is Your Parachute is a popular resource for the job search and self-assessments.
