Resources

In recent years, there has been much discussion nationally about unpaid internships. The U.S. Department of Labor Fair Labor Standards Act was cited in discussions about unpaid internships which resulted in some interns successfully suing their employers for unpaid internships they believed should be paid. One of those cases was recently reversed in favor of the employer as noted in a recent Chronicle article.

The primary purpose of an internship should be educational and to benefit the student, whether for pay or not. Although the organization may benefit from the activities of the intern, unpaid interns should not displace regular employees. Although not every internship is pursued for academic credit, when credit is given, the academic department should work with the student to develop learning goals which will be shared with the organization.

Career Services is a resource that stays abreast of trends and legal issues related to internships. Two documents, the Memorandum of Understanding and Academic Credit Contract, guide organizations, departments, and students to articulate learning goals and define expectations. The National Association of Colleges and Employers offers additional information on defining an internship.
