Chemist I
NE Department of Roads (NDOR)
Essential Duties: The selected individual will: * Perform X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy analysis and wet chemical analysis on hydraulic cements, fly ash, pozzolans, blended cements and other cementitious materials. * Use X-Ray Fluorescence Spectroscopy, Infrared Spectroscopy, Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy and various types of instrumentation to perform chemical and physical testing on traffic paints, structural steel paint and a wide variety of road construction materials, maintenance materials and environmental samples. * Prepare written and computer records. * Compile, enter, document and interpret data and results of daily analysis. * Research literature in chemical analysis related to the laboratory. * Working hours will be Monday through Friday during the hours of 7:30 am and 4:30 pm. * Chemistry laboratory duties will last until May with the possibility of more work in the chemistry laboratory or possibly another laboratory after May. REQUIRED: * A minimum of 1 year background in college chemistry, biochemistry, physics, OR geology is required. * Regular and reliable attendance is required. * A minimum of 15-20 hours a week is required. Prefer: * A background in preparing solutions and reagents. * A working knowledge of chemical laboratory terminology. * Previous exposure to chemical literature. $15.380 for 15-20hrs/wk through May 2010 with the possibility of extension. As a new educational endeavor, the City of Lincoln would like to implement Nebraska=s first volunteer Adopt-a-Stream program with hopes that it will expand to other communities state-wide. The AmeriCorps participant will be in charge of developing a city-wide Adopt-a-Stream program that will include developing a volunteer group database, identifying accessible waterways, assisting in the development of a Adopt-a-Stream handbook, creating an Adopt-a-Stream website, and implementing a yearly Adopt-a-Stream clean-up event. In addition to this, the participant may be involved in other water quality public education and participation programs. A qualified participant should be very comfortable with public speaking, have proficient computer skills, have good organizational skills, must have a valid driver=s license, be flexible with working occasional evenings or weekends, and must enjoy the outdoors, even when it rains. College course work and genuine interest in water quality, natural resources, aquatic ecosystems, and the environment is highly desirable. This is a half time AmeriCorps position through the City of Lincoln Parks and Recreation Go Green Initiative.
