The Nebraska Intercollegiate Forensics Association State tournament recently took place on the campus of the University of Nebraska Omaha on February 15-17, 2008. UNL scored 128 points on way to its third consecutive state speech championship. The team broke 23 events to finals. What's more is that UNL students performed exceptionally well in those finals rounds. UNL students captured 6 state championships (out of a total of 11 events) this year in the following events: communication analysis, extemporaneous speaking, informative speaking, after dinner speaking, duo interpretation, and poetry interpretation. On the debate side UNL also had a very strong showing. For the debate portion of the tournament UNL finished 2nd overall. The team also had 2 of the top 3 overall speakers for combined speech and debate. Senior Jessica Clark was named the 3rd best overall speaker and Senior Christine Osborn was named the overall #1 speaker in the state of Nebraska (this was the 3rd straight year a student from UNL has won this award). Finally, the state tournament established a new award this year for the tournament. The quality award is given to the team who earned the most points at the tournament per entry. UNL also won this award with an average of 2.1 points per entry compared to 2nd place Doane College who had only 1.5 points per entry. This award is especially meaningful because it recognizes that although UNL has one of the largest teams in the state, it also have the highest quality in the state, too. Go Husker Forensics! Congratulations to all of you!
