and most recently

  • The Nebraska Intercollegiate Forensics Association State tournament recently took place on the campus of the Concordia University in Seward, Nebraska on February 13-15, 2009. UNL scored 149 points on its way to its fourth consecutive state speech championship! The team broke 28 events to finals. UNO finished in second place 12 breaks and 76 points and Doane College finished third with 11 breaks and 48 points. What's more is that UNL students performed exceptionally well in those finals rounds. UNL students captured 6 state championships (out of a total of 11 events) this year in the following events: communication analysis, extemporaneous speaking, poetry interpretation, after dinner speaking, prose interpretation, and dramatic interpretation. On the debate side UNL also had a very strong showing. For the debate portion of the tournament UNL finished 2nd overall. The team also had the top two overall speakers for combined speech and debate. Freshman Nick Herink was named the 2nd best overall speaker and Senior Kevin Fruedenberg was named the overall #1 speaker in the state of Nebraska (this was the 4th straight year a student from UNL has won this award). UNL also captured the quality award for the tournament. The quality award is given to the team who earned the most points at the tournament per entry. UNL also won this award with an average of 2.3 points per entry. This award is especially meaningful because it recognizes that although UNL has one of the largest teams in the state, it also have the highest quality in the state, too. Finally, UNL won the overall combined title for speech and debate sweepstakes award. Go Husker Forensics! Congratulations to all of you!
