The faculty and students of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln send warm greetings!

Complete graduate information letter.

Choosing a program for graduate study is a big decision! Students have to think about fit with the program's emphases, faculty mentors, research and teaching opportunities, departmental climate, graduate placement, location, and cost. Let me introduce our community to you briefly. Click on the above link for the complete letter and information..

We offer M.A. and Ph.D. degrees, specializing in: Instructional Communication, Interpersonal & Family Communication, Organizational Communication, and Rhetoric & Culture. We are committed to the integration of these areas of study. We also participate in an interdisciplinary M.A. in Marketing, Communication and Advertising program (MCA). Check out the handbook at: http://www.unl.edu/journalism/pdf/grad_mca_040407.pdf

Our students are active scholars. Students have opportunities to work on research with faculty and several collaborative projects are in progress.

UNL offers a close working and mentoring community.

Our community has a commitment to professional development. We offer substantial mentoring and professional development activities in the department. Doctoral students may participate in the national Preparing Future Faculty Program, which provides hand-on experience on becoming a professor.

Our department has an outstanding record of student placement. Every student in recent years who has completed a Ph.D. and sought academic employment has secured a faculty position (which is the focus of our Ph.D. program). Our M.A.s are in top doctoral programs and working for excellent corporations.

Graduate students at Nebraska teach a variety of courses. Our students have won numerous teaching awards on campus and in the discipline, including the CSCA Outstanding Graduate Teaching Award and the UNL Graduate Teaching Award. Graduate students have an opportunity to work with a top collegiate forensics program as a coach.

GTAs have nicely furnished offices, computers, internet hookups, and access to some travel funds for conferences. Our faculty and graduate students represent gender, ethnic, and geographic diversity.

We offer summer graduate classes that reduce the overall time to degree. Starting in 2008, we reduced the overall required credits for Ph.D. students.

Lincoln is a wonderfully vibrant place of 230,000 people. It is big enough to be a medium-sized city and small enough to maintain a neighborly feel. Lincoln is the state capital and headquarters for many large and small firms. Unemployment is lower than the national average and housing is very reasonable. For more information, check out these websites: http://www.lincoln.org/, http://www.lincoln.ne.gov/ and http://www.lcoc.com/ . Lincoln's affordability is a very desirable aspect of the city for graduate students. For instance, recent calculations tell us that the cost of living in Iowa City is 15% higher, Madison is 16% higher, Bloomington is 12% higher, State College is 9% higher, Chicago is 75% higher, and New York City is 160% higher. To complete the application process, apply to both UNL Graduate Studies and the Department of Communication Studies (application and information on our website). We begin reviewing fall applications for the M.A and Ph.D. after January 15th and proceed until positions are filled. MCA admissions are done fall and spring. We look forward to hearing from you! Contact me or other UNL Communication Studies faculty members for more information.

Sincerely,

Dawnsignature
